Changing the Way We Think of Meditation

Most of us think that meditation is something we just can’t do.  For one, who has time?  Secondly, our minds cannot calm down.  And lastly, we may have tried it and decided that it didn’t work.  There is an answer.  Meditation is possible for anyone.  Yes, it takes some effort and a little time but the results are so immeasurable and vastly great that encouragement is necessary.

You may have heard that meditation begins with the breath.  This is true.  However, focusing on breathing is one of the most difficult things to do.  I recommend beginning another way.  Focus on relaxation and visualization, you breathe the tension out of your body from top to bottom or bottom to top, it doesn’t matter.  With every breath say to yourself, (in the third person): “With every breath, you are releasing all tension from your body”; “with every breath, you’re body is getting lighter and more relaxed”.  That is some of the focus part of beginning meditation.  Keep constantly talking to your self and breathing deeply to focus.

Visualization requires that you imagine or picture the tension leaving your body.  Also, any and all negative or outside thoughts or images that arise in your mind need to be put on a train and sent away.  Just do it quickly without spending any time on the thoughts, throw them on that train and see the train zooming down the track.

The other aspect of visualization is imagining the tension, which usually appears as dark and heavy, as something which changes into lightness.  Perhaps, as light itself or dew drops, crystals, glittering stars spreading across the night sky, whatever works for you.

This is a very important and cathartic aspect of visualization in meditation because what it does is take the tension, pain, negativity, etc. and transforms it into light and purity.  Transformation is very powerful in meditation.  It will change your world.
